
It’s your junior year, and by now you can probably see the finish line – graduation. Take these next few months very seriously. Get good grades, finalize your college search and do your best on standardized tests, and your senior year could bring some great rewards. Follow the timeline below to make sure you are on track to get into the college of your dreams:
Update your 5 Year Education Plan
Continue to take challenging courses that align with the TOPS/Regents Core Curriculum and meet college entrance requirements
Take the PSAT in October (this one is to qualify for National Merit Scholarship Competition).
Attend an ACT/SAT preparation workshop (if you can’t, you should purchase practice books, software, etc. which will help you prepare)
Take the ACT and/or SAT during the spring semester.
Prepare a list of questions to ask on campus visits
Visit college campuses (campus tour, visit with advisors/faculty, pick up admission packet)
Run for leadership positions in the organizations you are involved in
Ask your high school counselor for suggestions as to colleges you should consider but might not have thought of on your own (based on major, scholarships, location, etc.)
Start or update an academic resume
Consider putting together a portfolio that highlights your special skills & talents
Investigate scholarship opportunities
Volunteer for activities and clubs related to career interests
Get a part-time job, apprenticeship, or internship; or job shadow in a profession that interests you
Update your file of important documents (copies of awards and honors, report cards, lists of school and community activities).
Visit with your school counselor to make sure you are on track to graduate and fulfill college admission requirements
